Step back into the 1800s and experience the living history of the historic Rancho San Joaquin! Gather with Irvine Ranch Conservancy volunteers to discover the authentic skills and hardworking animals that shaped Orange County’s ranching legacy.
This hands-on, family-friendly activity offers a unique blend of California vaquero history, skill-building, and animal interaction – all in a stationary, fully accessible setting. Participants of all ages and skill levels will explore the story of the California Vaqueros and the art of roping, getting hands-on practice on a specialized training sled (called OMER) to master building a loop, swinging, and landing team roping catches.
You’ll also step into our corral to meet, pet, and groom gentle donkeys with soft brushes while learning about the vital role burros and draft animals played as steady trail partners on early California ranches. Best of all, families can track their progress, visit after visit, as every participant can register in our Official Ranch Roll
